April 29, 2014

Good morning. First I have to tell you that I actually did it. I ordered my baby chickens! I got all the supplies I will need for them and I placed the order yesterday. They will be coming via express mail and should be here on Friday or Saturday. My husband wanted Rhode Island Red chickens so I ordered four. The coop is in it's beginning stages but it won't need to be done for several weeks, the baby chicks will inside in a tote under a heat lamp for their first few weeks.
I am just about to give up on starting seeds inside. I set all my baby plants out in the sun the other day and they all got to much sun and it killed almost all of them. I haven't had any luck with them this year. I have lots of seeds to sow directly outside when its time. So I will still have a big garden but just not as big as it could have been.
My husband did the first tilling of the garden the other day and mixed in some manure. It will have to be tilled again before planting but it looks good and it will be larger than we had in the last couple years. We already have the strawberry and blueberry plants in the ground. Both are looking good and growing. We actually planted 25 strawberry plants with the two from last year we now have 27, hopefully they all make it. And we planted three blueberry plants which already have blooms on them. We were told to prune them and keep them from blooming and producing this year so the plant can put all their effort on growing and not producing fruit. We haven't don't that yet, they are more my husband's plants so I am leaving the pruning up to him.
My oldest niece went to her senior prom Saturday. I can't believe she is old enough to be a senior in high school soon to be graduated and an adult. WOW ! Where has the time gone. She looked so beautiful and her date, boyfriend, so handsome. I am so proud of her. She has grown into such a lovely young lady inside and out. She has such a kind heart. And the same sense of humor as the rest of us in this crazy family. I love you C.S.T. ;)
Well I need to go get this day started. Mom will be awake soon and needing my attention. Have a good day.

April 24, 2014

Good morning. First I will tell you about my opinion of a new restaurant my husband and I tried the other day. We had heard a lot of good things about Mia Margarita, the coal fired pizza oven place. Nice place in an up and coming location. The best part was the very nice and knowledgeable waiter, who help us make sense of the menu. The menu was in English but for us country folk it had words that we were not very familiar with. We just wanted your basic pepperoni pizza and a couple basic salads. He helped up order as close to that as we could. Their basic salad came with garbanzo beans, which we had him leave off, and two kinds of olives which my husband loved, I did not. My opinion of the meal was the salad, with a little modification, was good, not too big or too small. The pizza was good, not the best pizza I have ever tried but no where near the worst. (The best pizza award has to go to Chicho's Pizza in Virginia Beach. It would be very, very difficult for anyone to top their spicy sauce pizza.) The most fun thing at Mia Margaritas had to be the tray with the little spoons they bring out when you ask for red pepper flakes. The tray also has olive oil and Parmesan cheese. Would we go back probably not, not because it was bad but because we could get equally as good pizza and salad at a much better price at other pizza places around here.
Guess what I got in the mail yesterday... Yes more seeds! The seed guy, the seed club I am in, sent me Squash, Chinese Cabbage, Corn, and Pumpkin(Curshaw). Yes curshaw pumpkin! Those are good to make pumpkin pies with. I had a couple years ago found a bag of curshaw seeds that Mom had saved from years before and tried to grow them without any luck. Also the other day my husband and I was at Kroger's at just the right time and seen tomato plants being loaded off the truck. They were the biggest, healthiest tomato plants from a store that I had ever seen. We had to buy one. I know GMO and non-heirloom but I decided I don't care because I wanted that plant. Also my husband who thinks I am crazy for having and getting more and more seeds and plants was in a convenience store and came across a package of onion sets and had to buy them for me. LOL. He may think I am crazy but I think he is becoming as crazy as I am.
So I wanted to knock down the old cross-tie (railroad-ties)building and using any of the good cross-ties to rebuild the building to use as a chicken coop. The old building was used years ago as a chicken coop but was old and falling in and had bad, rotten cross-ties that needed to be removed. I hired cousin S to do all the hard, heavy lifting. He cleaned out the junk and knocked down the building yesterday. I knew it was going to happen but I was very sad to see it down. Today he came back and used the good cross-ties to rebuild a part of the new chicken coop. Now we just have to build the roof and the yard area. I am so excited to get this done and get chickens. I already have a couple people asking to buy eggs off me when I get them. I am so excited.
I need to go get something done today. Have a good day.

April 22, 2014

Good morning. It was a very busy weekend and it looks like it will continue to be busy for a while. Friday was Good Friday and a busy day for me. Mom desperately needed a hair cut, so Ms. M,  Mom, and I went driving around looking for a place, any place open with time to give her a hair cut. If I wasn't such a procrastinator I would have thought about it earlier and scheduled her an appointment. Every place in town and in the towns around were packed. We ended up in Adamston at a small beautician's shop who apparently catered to old ladies by the clientele that was at the shop. I am not going to say which shop we were at because it was a very bad hair cut and cost $15. We ended up coming home and Ms. M had to fix it. Also when we got there, there was an older lady there who was getting her hair dyed, she said she was almost 90, she looked much younger and very healthy, especially compared to Mom who was sitting next to her. Well this lady who was getting her hair dyed, we were totally worried how her hair was going to turn out. She sat there way too long with the dye on and the dye was all over her skin. I would have loved to see what she looked like when the beautician actually got around to washing the dye out. Anyway, Mom's new hair cut, with Ms. M's help looks great.
Friday night was Good Friday service at church. I didn't go. I feel extremely bad about that. I was so busy and tired preparing for Easter Dinner at our house on Sunday and everything else I was doing. I feel like I am being pulled so many different directions. Mom, husband, home, garden, dinner plans and cleaning, sisters, picture project, church, etc, etc...... I feel as though I am not getting the order of importance right.
Saturday was busy cooking and cleaning. I am very thankful for a wonderful husband who will help no matter what I ask him to do. Not everyone is as lucky as I am to have such a great support and partner in life.
Sunday was Easter Sunday. I woke up very early and my husband had to work that night and got home around 7am and jumped in and helped get everything prepared. Mom had to be up dressed, fed and then redressed to go to church. Church was at 8:45 am which is extremely early for us. Mom is not normally up and out of bed till around 9am. Church service was great. We are lucky to have and go to a church that is a small country church. We are all family if not by blood then definitely in heart and spirit. Everyone knows every ones' names. Of course there was more people who attended than who usually attend.  I don't go as much as I should and use too. My unacceptable excuse is it is to hard to get Mom there every week.
After church service there is an Easter egg hunt, the junior class and adults hide the eggs for the primary class to find. It is always fun to see the happy excited little kids finding eggs.
My uncle who is also the superintendent of the church was sick and in the hospital during the Easter Sunday services. He was greatly missed. He is such a kind, loving, Godly man. A great role model for any man. And a great role model of a Godly person for me. He is dear to me and so many other people. He was released from the hospital just in time to join his family for Easter Dinner.
We had 16 people here at the house for our Easter Dinner. We missed one of my brother-in-laws, who had to work, and one of my nieces and her kids.  We always have a good time together. Also our family keeps growing. One of my nephews brought his girlfriend and one on my nieces brought her boyfriend and his sister. We definitely have and open door policy. Any hungry or lonely person may stop in and grab a plate and join in with the craziness.
My husband was able to try out his new turkey fryer that my sister M got him for Christmas. I was very scared about it. But he was safe and cooked the turkey successfully. We all had to go outside and watch him put the turkey in and take pictures. The turkey was delicious, so wasn't all the rest of the food. We are such good cooks!
I had been working on a project for several months that I had wanted to complete before Easter but only got partly done. Mom had collected many, many, many pictures but had never did anything with them. I decided to put them all in picture albums. I got 12 albums done then couldn't do any more. But it was ok. My family all sat around most of the day on Sunday and picked out all the pictures they wanted and took them home. Some how I ended up with another suit case full of old family pictures from my sister's house. Great, that is what I really needed, more pictures!
Well I am done writing for today. I will write again on Thursday. This was a very long post! Have a good day.

April 17, 2014

Good morning. To start the day off on a funny note I must tell you what my husband is doing right now. He has his golf clubs in the bathtub. I find this so funny. He says he has to get all the dirt out of the grooves so the ball will spin right. I am not sure about that but I find this very funny. He is so excited that he gets to go play golf today, the first time this year. Do I mind that he goes and plays golf? NO. Everyone needs to get out and do something that they enjoy. It makes him happy which makes me happy. But I still can pick on him for giving his clubs a bath. LOL!
The other day I received hard red wheat seeds from a stranger form Phoenix, AZ. I had posted a request on a seed exchange FB page. And I will be getting some soft white wheat seeds from someone in Utah. I find that so cool. Also I got Forget-Me-Not seeds in the mail yesterday from Aunt Betty. Thank you Aunt Betty. I love getting seeds, any and all seeds.
So the story of the ring. I had posted something of FB that got every one's curiosity up then forgot to write about it on my last blog post. In the mid nineties Mom had found a class ring and brought it home in the hopes of finding its owner. If you knew my Mom(before the dementia) you can imagine how she would have been, excited about looking for the owner, worried about the person who lost the ring, and dreaming of one day returning the ring. But my Dad, if you knew my Dad you can imagine, thought that it was a dumb idea, maybe he was a little jealous. He told her to throw it away. She said she did but instead she put it in a bowl in top of a cabinet in the kitchen and it was forgotten about for all these years. I came across it this year while spring cleaning. I decided that I would help Mom find the owner. After many Internet and FB searches, a couple FB messages to strangers, and waiting for responses for a month I finally FB chatted with a wife of a man who I really thought was the owner of the ring. An hour long conversation with her and a quick phone call from her to her mother-in-law, we figured out he was not the one I was looking for. But good thinking of that man to look in his high school yearbook lead to the name of the person I was looking for. But he had no other information on him. I could not find a FB page for him, I thought I had hit a dead end. Then the other night I it just hit me while washing dishes, phone book! I found his name and called. A man answered the phone and I told him who I was and that this was going to be about the strangest call he had ever received and that I had his class ring. He acted like he didn't know what I was talking about but a voice in the back ground said "it's your son's ring." She picked up the phone and turned out to be the owner of the ring's sister. Yes it was her brother's ring. I got his address and will mail him the ring along with a letter telling him how I came to have his ring all these years later. If Mom was in her right mind she would be so happy to have found the owner. I cried as I spoke to the sister of the owner knowing that I completed something that she would have wanted to do for so long. She would have cried too.
Easter is coming up fast. I have to get this house clean and have been working on it for the last month. I feel like I am not getting anywhere. I went down with cousin J yesterday and cleaned the church to get it ready for Good Friday and Easter Sunday services.
I need to get off here if I am going to get anything done today. Have a good day.

April 15, 2014

Good morning. I actually had a busy last couple days. Mom had a doctor's appointment and all is well. Nurse called and said her lab work was perfect. We must be doing something right. Mom went to my sister M and brother G's house for the weekend.  Mom always has a good time there.
My husband and I went on a mini vacation again to the Wheeling Casino. We love to go to the dog track. I know one thing, I can't pick a winning dog for nothing. I didn't win anything, my husband won twice. He walked away winning around $18. We are definitely not high rollers. We stayed in the same hotel that we did last time, nothing expensive but a nice big bed. The next morning we went to Cabela's just to buy some fudge. They have the best fudge ever. We also stopped at the Russell Stover store and got Mom a couple gifts for Easter.
We went a different direction home than we did going. We stopped at the Grave Creek Mound and Museum. This mound is the tallest mound in the US. We learned a lot about the mound and the people who built it. We learned things that we never knew before, very interesting. We walked to the top of the mound, it is a beautiful sight from way up there. Also in the Museum was a display of Ladies Fashion Dolls of the Nineteenth Century. The dresses were beautiful, I especially loved all the lace pieces.
We got home with just enough time to get ready and go to the movies. We watched God's Not Dead. It is a wonderful movie. I encourage everyone to go see it. It was a great date movie for my husband and myself.
Sunday morning I was able to go to church. I enjoy going so much. Brother G and sister M brought Mom home after I got home from church. We had a nice time just hanging out and talking. After our company left I got busy scrubbing the front porch. I don't know how it gets so dirty. Hopefully on Easter it will be nice enough to spend some time outside.
I need to go get some cleaning done, Easter will be here soon. Have a good day.

April 10, 2014

Good morning. Today Mom has a doctor's appointment. Glad I have Ms. M here today to help get Mom up and out of the house. We are trying to figure out what to do with Mom's hair. She has always had very thin, straight hair. Months ago Aunt L permed Mom's hair now it is growing out and is very frizzy. Even after we wash it and fix it all pretty, when it dries it is a mess. I have wanted to take her and get her hair cut but she keeps saying no. I wish I knew how to cut hair.
It has been so beautiful outside lately. I love to spent time on the front porch sitting in the sun. I keep trying to take Mom outside but even with a jacket on she says it is cold. Hopefully when it gets warmer out she will enjoy being outside like she use too.
Plants are still growing well. Apple plants are doing wonderful. I have several more seeds that I would like to go ahead and start but I don't have any room to put them. I would love to go ahead and get the bigger cucumber plants in the ground but I am expecting more cold weather to come.
I need to get off here and get ready for our outing today. Have a good day.

April 8, 2014

Good morning. I sure am tired this morning. I slept good last night so I don't know why. I could go back to bed no problem at all, if I didn't have any responsibilities that is. Mom will be yelling to get up soon.
It seems like its been a long time since I wrote, let me see if I can remember what I have done the last couple days. Well first my plants are doing good. Tomato and cucumber plants are doing wonderful now that I have moved them out of the mice's reach. By the way I think we may have gotten rid of all the mice. I still have mouse traps set up all over the laundry room just in case. I had planted a whole pack of lavender seeds and some had started to grow then they all died. I bought two more packs and started a few seeds from each pack in peat pots to see if they will grow. My husband thinks I have issues, like I am addicted to seeds. LOL! But I do think he is right. I can't go anywhere with out buying a couple more seeds. Yesterday we went to Lowe's to buy a couple blueberry plants (my husband wanted those) and I just had to stop at their seed display, that's where I got the two packs of lavender seeds and I bought a pack of wild flower seeds. I plan on planting those up by the rail trail. I got my seeds for this month from the seed guy the other day. I got Swiss Chard, Bush Beans, Peas, and Chervil. I now have several packs of green beans and peas, I can see a lot of canning in my future.
Last night when I opened the back door to feed the cat I smelled a wood fire. I had to go investigate. My sister/neighbor had a small campfire in her back yard. Like a moth to a flame, I couldn't stay away. The first campfire of the year. I love the smell of wood burning. I could have set there all night just looking into the flames and feeling its warmth but life's responsibilities pulled me away. That short few minutes that I was there looking at the flames I think did something in my brain. Like a switch was flipped. I feel more energized, like the darkness of winter has lifted. Spring has sprung in my brain. Plus seeing two almost open tulip buds in my flower bed didn't hurt either.

April 3, 2014

Good morning. Not much going on today. Trying to get some spring cleaning done. I cleaned all the glassware in the kitchen yesterday and today I need to try and finish up with the kitchen. I would like to have the whole house spring cleaned by Easter.
Plants are doing better since I moved them from the mice's reach. Now I have plants in pretty much every room in the house. I have several apple seedlings growing now. Just in the last day I have three more popped up out of the dirt.
My sister H told me that the flower that I didn't know what it was is a hyacinth. My aunt L told us that that flower was my grandma's favorite. It doesn't look all that pretty for some reason, not like the pictures I find on the internet but hopefully next year it will come back and look better.
Mom is doing well. Took her outside and we set on the porch for a few hours the other day. It was nice and sunny but a little windy. Cousin V and sister H both stopped by and spent some time talking and just hanging out. Mom seemed to be in a good mood. She tried to talk a little not sure what she was talking about but glad to hear her trying to hold a conversation. I think the nice weather will be good for the both of us.
I have been having trouble with my right eye, well both my eyes, but the right one seem to give me more trouble. I have been having light flashes which when I looked it up could me nothing or something. I am saying it is the nothing. If it continues I will have to go the eye doctor. I need glasses anyway, I think. I keep putting it off, I hate going to the eye doctor more than I hate going to the dentist.
I need to go get this kitchen cleaned up. Have a good day.

April 1, 2014

Good morning. Wow, it is April already. This first week of April's weather forecast looks good, well at least it isn't calling for snow. Friday was so nice, I spent some time outside sitting in the sun and dreaming of the garden I am going to plant. We have two crocuses blooming in the yard and some other flower blooming. I am not sure what it is, I had thought it was going to be a tulip but it isn't. I think I planted it last fall thinking it was a tulip but now I am not sure what it is.
Friday my husband and I was trying to kill time while my car was getting the exhaust worked on so we went to a thrift store to look around. I found a plate that looked like it had a picture of my church on it, the dates were right and the name was kinda right. Well I had to buy it. I took it to my cousin J's house so she could see it and it is sadly not our church. Close but not. I had thought I found something really cool.
Yes I did it too, I knocked off my tomato plants like my husband and my cat had done. Those poor plants are not having any luck. We also have a mouse again. They keep eating my sprouted plants, they prefer the tomato and bell pepper seedlings. They also killed all my early cucumber plants. I am now using every method to kill or trap a mouse known to man. So far I have got one and there is still at least one more, it ran across my husbands feet.
When I was making a pie last week, one of the apples had seeds that were sprouted inside. I put them in dirt and yesterday I noticed that one is growing up out of the dirt. I have moved it to a different room so the mouse can't get to it. I don't know if it will ever produce apples, being that it came from an apple from a store, you know GMOs and all, but I am going to give it a shot.
Yesterday my husband and I went for a walk in the woods. It was so nice to get out in nature. I love walking in the woods. I am so glad the weather is getting nicer so that I can get out more often.
I can see my self going on lots of walks when I have help here with Mom.
I need to get off here. I have a few errands to run today. Have a good day.
